Bill Yates Speaks to Superintendents at Sept. 9 Educational Symposium

Bill Yates addressed Central California members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America at the September 2013 Annual Elections and Educational Symposium, held at River Oaks Golf Course in Paso Robles, CA..

Yates, who was one of the original speakers at the first national Symposium on Affordable Golf in Pinehurst, NC, linked pace of play and affordable golf in his presentation "Pace of Play: Affordable Golf is Quality Golf." He joined other speakers including golf course architect Richard Mandell, who founded the Symposium series four years ago and who explored "Affordable Golf - Aren't We There Yet?"

"If something is valued by a customer, then it's affordable to that customer," said Yates. "This can happen at any price point - a $5 green fee or a $500 green fee. So the issue isn't how to make golf cheaper, it's how to help courses deliver consistently high value rounds of golf."

Yates introduced his 5 Factors That Impact Pace of Play™ that he uses to work with courses in improving pace of play and quality. "One of the 5 factors is 'Course Maintenance' because Superintendents have a big influence on playing conditions by the way courses are maintained," he said. "This also influences the pace and flow of play. So making sure that Golf Course Superintendents are part of management efforts to improve pace of play and quality helps ensure that delivering value and therefore "affordability" is within the reach of any golf course."

The September event was held in preparation for the first major West Coast Symposium on Affordable Golf, scheduled for April 2014.
